Fall 2020 Advising Notes

Please note that this information is tentative, and may change often as new information becomes available. Please monitor this website regularly for updates. Information for additional B.Sc. majors will continue to be added.

Update #2 (September 1, 2020): Students may be interested in viewing some of the introductory videos that have been prepared for several courses offered by the College of Biological Science.

Update (July 10, 2020): we are aware of two courses that were previously indicated as having a mandatory face-to-face component, MICR*3220 & PBIO*4000, which will now also have a virtual option available for students who are unable to attend face-to-face. The virtual option will be AD-S (Sychronous), with the expectation that students be available during the posted times (posted July 10, 2020).

Update regarding Research/Thesis/Project Courses (various departments): Students are advised to contact their Faculty supervisors regarding plans for the Fall 20 semester. Depending on the department, lab capacities, and nature of the project, it may be possible to arrange face-to-face components for those students that are willing and able to come to campus.

Majors/minors are listed in alphabetical order. Please scroll down.

Animal Biology (ABIO)

Please note that none of the ABIO required courses scheduled for Fall 2020 will have a mandatory face-to-face component. Therefore, you are not required to be present on campus unless you choose to take elective courses with face-to-face components or wish to use on-campus services and facilities. Please contact the B.Sc. Academic Counselling Centre if you have any questions.

Biochemistry: Co-op (BIOC:C)

Please note that there are two courses scheduled for the major in the Fall semester that will have a mandatory face-to-face component in Fall 2020: CHEM*2480 and CHEM*3750.

CHEM*2480 is normally scheduled in your program for Semester 3, which is a Fall semester. If you are scheduled to take this course in Fall 20, we recognize that it may not be feasible for all students to come to campus. In that case, some alternatives are available:

  1. Take the lecture portion of the course in Fall 20 and complete the lab component in a future semester, as soon as it becomes feasible;
  2. Delay taking CHEM*2480 until Summer 2021 (semester 4). This would be done concurrently with BIOC*3570, which normally requires CHEM*2480 as a prerequisite. CHEM*2480 has been approved as a co-requisite for students taking BIOC 3570 in Summer 21, so please contact the B.Sc. Academic Counselling Centre to be waived into BIOC*3570 when the time comes. Students may wish to considering taking MICR 2420 in Fall 20 in order to alleviate their course load in Summer 21.

CHEM*3750 is normally scheduled in your program for Semester 5 (Fall) for students in sequence ‘A’, or Semester 6 (Fall) for students in sequence ‘B’. If you are scheduled to take this course in Fall 20, we recognize that not all students may be able to come to campus. In that case, some alternatives are available:

Students in Coop Sequence ‘A’ may:

  1. Take the lecture portion of the course in Fall 20 and complete the lab component in a future semester, as soon as it becomes feasible;
  2. Delay taking CHEM*3750 until Fall 21 (Semester 6). Students may wish to take an elective or restricted elective instead in Fall 20.

Students in Coop sequence ‘B’ may:

  1. Take the lecture portion of the course in Fall 20 and complete the lab component in a future semester, as soon as it becomes feasible;
  2. Delay taking CHEM*3750 until Fall 21 (Semester 8). Students may wish to take an elective or restricted elective instead in Fall 20.

Please contact the B.Sc. Academic Counselling Centre if you have any questions.

Please note that both CHEM*2480 and CHEM*3750 remain required courses for the major, and both lecture and lab components must be completed to graduate.

Biochemistry: Regular (BIOC)

Please note that one of the courses required for your major in the Fall semester will have a mandatory face-to-face component in Fall 2020: CHEM*3750. Please note that students in the BIOC regular program are not scheduled to take CHEM 2480 until the Winter semester.

CHEM*3750 is normally scheduled in your program for Semester 5 (Fall). If you are scheduled to take this course in Fall 20, we recognize that it may not be feasible for all students to come to campus. In that case, some alternatives are available:

  1. Take the lecture portion of the course in Fall 20 and complete the lab component in a future semester, as soon as it becomes feasible;
  2. Delay taking CHEM*3750 until Fall 21 (Semester 7).

Biochemistry (BIOC): Minor

Please note that one required course for the minor will have a mandatory face-to-face component in the Fall 20 semester: CHEM 2480. As in previous years, we recommend that CHEM*2480 be taken in the Winter semester.

Biodiversity (BIOD)

Please note that none of the BIOD required courses scheduled for Fall 2020 will have a mandatory face-to-face component. Therefore, you are not required to be present on campus unless you choose to take elective courses with face-to-face components or wish to use on-campus services and facilities. Please contact the B.Sc. Academic Counselling Centre if you have any questions.

CHEM*2400 is normally scheduled in your program for Semester 3, which is a Fall semester but will not be offered in F20 so for this semester only, BPCH:C students will take CHEM 2480. If you are scheduled to take this course in Fall 20, we recognize that it may not be feasible for all students to come to campus. In that case, some alternatives are available:

  1. Take the lecture portion of the course in Fall 20 and complete the lab component in a future semester, as soon as it becomes feasible;
  2. Delay taking CHEM*2400 until Summer 2021 (semester 4) and CHEM 3430 until Fall 2021.
