Winter 21 Advising Notes

Please note that this information is tentative, and may change often as new information becomes available. Please monitor this website regularly for updates. Information for additional B.Sc. majors may be added.

Update regarding Research/Thesis/Project Courses (various departments): Students are advised to contact their Faculty supervisors regarding plans for the Winter 21 semester. Depending on the department, lab capacities, and nature of the project, it may be possible to arrange face-to-face components for those students that are willing and able to come to campus.

For any majors not listed here, there should not be mandatory courses that have required face-to-face components. Therefore, students are not required to be present on campus, unless you choose to take elective courses with face-to-face components or wish to use on-campus services and facilities. Please contact the B.Sc. Academic Counselling Centre if you have any questions.

Biochemistry: Regular (BIOC)

BIOC students are scheduled to take CHEM 2480 and CHEM 2700 in Winter 21 (Semester 4). Both CHEM 2480 and CHEM 2700 have a face to face lab component that is required. Please register for these courses only if you can be on campus for the face to face lab component.

If you are unable to come to campus to complete the labs in person, these courses can be delayed. CHEM 2480 can be taken in Fall 21 (Semester 5) or Winter 22 (Semester 6) and then BIOC 3570 may be moved to Fall 22 (Semester 7). Students would still take BIOC 4540 in Winter 23 (Semester 8) per the regular Schedule of Studies.

CHEM 2700 is offered in Winter and Summer semesters only. If students are unable to attend the labs in Winter 21, CHEM 2700 can be moved to Winter 22 (Semester 6) - or even Summer 21 if students can come to campus for that semester. CHEM 3750 can then be taken in Fall 22 (Semester 7).

Biological and Pharmaceutical Chemistry: Regular (BPCH)

BPCH students are scheduled to take CHEM 2400 and CHEM 2700 in Winter 21 (Semester 4). CHEM 2400 will not be offered in Winter 21 so in its place students will need to take CHEM 2480. Lab capacities must be drastically reduced in order to meet requirements for COVID-19 safety protocols and for this reason, students will need to take CHEM 2480 in place of CHEM 2400.

Both CHEM 2480 and CHEM 2700 have a face-to-face lab component that is required. Please register for these courses only if you can be on campus for the face-to-face lab component.

If you are unable to come to campus to complete the labs in person, these courses can be delayed. If safety restrictions are eased, CHEM 2400 may be offered in Fall 21(Semester 5) and if they remain the same, CHEM 2480 can be taken at that time. The Analytical Chemistry courses, CHEM 2480 and CHEM 3430 are offered in all 3 semesters so can be delayed by a semester.

CHEM 2700 is offered in winter and summer only. If students are unable to attend the labs in Winter 21 (Semester 4), CHEM 2700 will have to be delayed to Winter 22 (Semester 6) - or Summer 21 if students can come to campus for the Summer 21 semester. CHEM 3750 must then be taken in Fall 22 (Semester 7) - or Summer 22 as it is also offered in summer. Since a fourth-year organic course is required by the BPCH major, a special offering of a 4th year organic chemistry course will be done in Winter 23 (Semester 8) to ensure that students can meet the requirements of their majors.

Biomedical Toxicology: Regular (BTOX)

BTOX students are scheduled to take CHEM 2480 and CHEM 2700 in Winter 21 (Semeter 4). Both CHEM 2480 and CHEM 2700 have a face to face lab component that is required. Please register for these courses only if you can be on campus for the face to face lab component.

If you are unable to come to campus to complete the labs in person, these courses can be delayed. CHEM 2480 and CHEM 3430 (which now replaces TOX 3300) are offered in all 3 semesters. CHEM 2480 can be delayed to Fall 21(Semester 5) and then CHEM 3430 taken in Winter 22 (Semester 6).

CHEM 2700 is offered in winter and summer only. If students are unable to attend the labs in Winter 21, CHEM 2700 will have to be delayed to Winter 22 (or S21 if students can come to campus for S21 semester). CHEM 3750 is not required but if students wish to take it as a restricted elective, they can still do so in Fall 22.

Chemistry: Regular (CHEM)

CHEM students are scheduled to take CHEM 2400 and CHEM 2700 in Winter 21 (Semester 4). CHEM 2400 will not be offered in Winter 21 so in its place students will need to take CHEM 2480. Molecular Biology & Genetics: (MBG)

MBG students are scheduled to take CHEM 2700 in Winter 21 (Semester 4). CHEM 2700 has a face-to-face lab component that is required. Please register for this courses only if you are able to be on campus for the face-to-face lab component in Winter 21. CHEM 2700 is offered in Winter and Summer semesters only.
