Approved Electives

Types of Electives

B.Sc. students are typically required to complete electives from the categories listed below. For a detailed breakdown of how many courses are required in each category, students should refer to the Undergraduate Calendar.

Liberal Education Electives - A set list of approved courses for B.Sc students to choose from that is not restricted by what major you are in. These are typically courses that fall into the languages, social sciences, arts and more. See a list of the approved liberal education electives on our B.Sc Academic Advising website.. You can also review this list of popular liberal education electives within the first year level..

Science Electives - Science focused courses that are not in the list of courses in your Schedule of Studies for your major. They can be broken down further into biological science and physical science electives. Some science courses are not specifically Biological or Physical science but still count as a Science Elective. - See full list of Approved Science Electives for B.Sc Students below.
1.    Biological Science Electives
2.    Physical Science Electives
3.    Uncategorized - Some science courses are not specifically Biological or Physical science but still count as a Science Elective.

Restricted Electives - courses that are from a set list for a specific major that must be taken to meet degree requirements - Find the list of restricted electives under your major in the Undergraduate Calendar.

Free Electives - These can be more or less any course offered by the UofG as long as students have the pre-requisite and it is not restricted against students in their major. All courses available to B.Sc. students can be used to fulfill this requirement. Courses not eligible to B.Sc. students are clearly marked within their course description.
